Deep Robotics unveiled the latest version of its intelligent four-legged robot, the Lite3, at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in London last week.

There are four different models in the Lite3 series, with its entry-level model, Basic, priced at $2,890 (USD) for technology enthusiasts.

Three other models, Venture, Pro, and LIDAR have been designed for scientific study and educational purposes. 

Deep Robotics a Chinese company specializing in quadrupedal robot development, has returned with a major upgrade on the latest robot dog, which is equipped to carry loads of up to 7.5kg and can operate for up to 90 mins with a range of five kilometers.

According to Deep Robotics, the newest robot has a 50 percent increase in torque over the Lite2 model: “The high-torque joint drive-module allows for high torque density, enhanced rotation stability and less power consumption.”

“Lite3 features an industrial-level real-time control system with depth optimization, a first for the product lineup, with overall computing power increased threefold. The algorithm upgrades make its movement more agile and responsive.”

“Lite 3 can climb steps up to 15 centimeters in height, close to the current maximum for a quadruped robot of its size and runs at a peak speed of four meters per second. It can also perform horizontal jumps, high jumps, front flips, and other similarly difficult maneuvers,” said the company.

The latest technology is made to be flexible and scalable, showcasing an open modular structure. 

The device can be enhanced to fit modules such as the ones for Real-Time Kinematic (RTK), artificial intelligence, edge processing and other types of sensors which can be readily added. 

Through its leveled–perception capability interfaces (SDK, API), LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and depth camera further developed auto-navigation, auto-stop, obstacle avoidance, visual positioning, 3D scanning and other perceptional abilities.

Lite3 also has the ability to navigate in challenging terrains and initiate emergency rescue missions. “Lite3 has site inspection capacities, especially in rough terrain in the aftermath of accidents/natural disasters. The key objective is to support humans on repetitive and high-risk tasks,” said a company press release.

Equipped with combined advanced mobility and an open modular structure, the Lite3 is designed to serve education, research, and innovative entertainment purposes. The intelligent dog can perform complex moves such as front flipping by introducing new features.

According to the robotics organization, esteemed universities like Tsinghua, Peking, Edinburgh and University College London have adopted the use of robot dogs for research purposes.

Product manager at DEEP Robotics, DongXin Zheng, said, “While we have been able to advance the technical aspects of Lite3, we have also managed to bring the pricing down so that it is more affordable for an even broader group of potential users.”

Other more industrial robots in the Deep range include the Jueying X20 Robot dog, which has a payload of 85kg.
